Full-Depth Lot Reconstruction at Staples—Without Closing the Store
Years of deferred maintenance had finally caught up with the parking lot at a Staples location, leaving B&C Blacktop with one option: tear it out and start over. At more than 53,000 square feet, it was a big job—and one that had to happen while the store stayed open for business.
The Challenge
The existing lot had reached the end of its lifespan, with wear that went deep enough that a standard mill and overlay wouldn’t get the job done. A typical parking lot is built up with 2-3 layers of asphalt over time, and this one needed attention all the way through, making full reconstruction rather than parking lot repairs the right call. The issue was that Staples couldn’t close for the job. Customers needed to keep parking, shopping, and coming and going the entire time.
The Solution
B&C Blacktop’s crews performed a complete 4-inch mill and 4-inch repave, removing the entire failed lot and rebuilding it from the base up rather than resurfacing over a bad foundation. To keep the store open and accessible, the job was split into halves, with customers shuffled between sections as each side was completed. Two crews worked the project in tandem, finishing the full 53,200-square-foot lot in four days (two days per crew). The job wrapped up with a full restriping of the lot.
The Result
Staples got a completely rebuilt parking lot, built from the ground up instead of patched over failing layers, with zero interruption to store operations. Customers kept shopping throughout the project, and the lot is now set up to last for years without the kind of deep structural failure that made the original reconstruction necessary in the first place.
